Prefinal year students cannot appear for GATE 2012. From this year Offline applications have been stopped. You have to apply online only and download your admit card.

GATE 2012: Road to PSU Jobs
In past few years many private & public sector companies have started accepting GATE score in stead of conducting their recruitment exams. IndianOil (IOCL) started accepting GATE score for Engineer Trainee jobs from 2011. BHEL and NTPC will be using GATE 2012 score next year.
GATE 2012: Higher studies
Admission to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges in India are done based on GATE score. GATE qualified candidates with qualifying Bachelor or Master degree are eligible for Master/Doctoral programmes in relevant branches. Some institutions specify GATE as the mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes.
GATE Scholarship
To avail the scholarship through GATE, the candidate must additionally secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. GATE qualification, however, is not required for candidates with Master degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy who may be seeking scholarship/assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.
GATE qualified candidates in Engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/Engineer.
