What is Web 3.0?

What is Web 3.0?

The web has evolved several changes since its inception, starting from Web 1.0 which forms the most rudimentary form of a web. Next going on to more advanced forms of Web which were called as Web 2.0.

To give a brief history, Web 1.0 consisted of static web pages which were purely for informational purpose. A more advanced version of this came in with Web 2.0 which supported interactive and dynamic web pages.

Social networking sites, AJAX, media sharing, lightweight collaboration, and so many other things form a part of Web 2.0. However, the evolution of the Web doesn't stop over here.

Further ahead to this, a complete re-invention of Web 2.0 would be in the form of Web 3.0.

WHAT IS WEB3.0

A brief explanation to this is a more intelligent, third generation web. Currently, we are witnessing this transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0. The third-generation web would bring along changes not only to the front-end development but will also constitute several back-end changes.

There is no full proof definition of what is Web 3.0. However, Web 3.0 is much bigger and better. This not only aims to be intelligent but also aims to be self-sufficient and provide seamless network management.

A lot of Web 3.0 would be artificial intelligence dependent and would include several other advanced technologies.

HOW WILL WEB 3.0

It is difficult to conceptualize how web 3.0 will work without sufficient examples. Let us check one such example.

In case you wish to watch a horror movie and shop specifically for a mobile phone, then you can customize your search. This means search engines will no longer just target keywords. This is going to be more complex and advance searching.

So, in this case, you can simply search – I want to watch a horror movie and shop for mobile phones. What are my options? Based on your search and earlier registered choices, the search engine will provide you with multiple options. And yes, this would be geo-targeted at several instances.

This doesn't mean you always need to write multiple sentences to the search engines. For instance, today if you just type in cricket to search, then you would find all searches relevant to the game of cricket. However, cricket is also an insect which may be the one you are searching for.

In the case of Web 3.0, the moment you type cricket, the search engine will determine the category of search that you are looking for. Based on your earlier searches and topic of interest search engine will show you the more relevant searches. In this case, it would be cricket insect.

In terms of predictability, web 3.0 would prompt you more relevant searches and compute the best-fit search options based on behavioral patterns. In web 2.0, if two people sit next to each other and provide the same search query, then the search results are exactly similar.

However, with web 3.0, if two people sit next to each other and provide the same search query, the results can be different. This means even though you belong to the same geographical location, the search results will be influenced by several other parameters.

MAIN FEATURES OF WEB 3.0

  • Artificial Intelligence: Web 3.0 will be integrated with natural language processing to make computers understand human language and provide faster and better results. This is the key to intelligent computation.
  • Semantic Web: Web 3.0 is tightly interlinked with the semantic web. This helps in improving web technologies. Semantic web facilitates to generate content based on the analysis of words by understanding the meaning of each word rather than focusing on keywords.
  • Connectivity: Connectivity is another key feature of Web 3.0. This aims to improve user experience and leverages the usability of all the available information.
  • 3D Graphics: 3D graphics has spread across in several fields and it is time it is tightly coupled into web 3.0
  • Ubiquity: The same content will be accessible using multiple applications. Every service will be available over every device and can be accessed from anywhere.

Apple's Siri, Alexa are classic examples of web 3.0 which combines Artificial intelligence with voice recognition.

Web 3.0 is still under development and a lot of research is yet to be done. A lot of concepts including the basic definition of what is categorized as web 3.0 is vague.

A lot of novel technologies are being tried to automate things. This comprises of Artificial intelligence, big data, the blockchain, and similar newer technologies. However, this seems to be a vague list of technologies. This is still getting evolved.

These newer technologies require more advanced skills. This is something that is currently limited. With a low skill set, it is challenging to bring in newer innovation.

Web 3.0 will be primarily focused on data. This data is very huge and appropriate technology and storage architecture needs to be designed. While Bigdata seems to be the way forward, a lot of research is yet to be done on the most effective use of technology to store data.

Web 3.0 deals with data and can lead to several privacy concerns. Laws across several countries are restrictive. This is again a grey area on what information and access to personal data should be permissible and restricted while using web 3.0

Yet another unanswered question is about the usability of techniques such as SEO and keywords. These have been fundamental concepts for search engine till web 2.0. With web 3.0 will these be completely scrapped or will this still have relevance is again a question that experts need to deduce.

With backend and storage technology web 3.0 is also needed to define what kind of applications can be made web 3.0 compliant. At certain point will this require browsers to also be web 3.0 complaint is again a point to worry about.

What would be the path taken for a complete transition from web 2.0 to web 3.0 is again a shady area.

Web 3.0 is interesting and has a lot of growth potential. It is still in its initial stages. While this is gradually evolving there is still a lot of research which needs to be done.

A known fact is the set of advantages that web 3.0 can bring in to the complete web experience. With no doubt, web 3.0 goes beyond machines.

While web 3.0 seems feasible in many aspects, this still has its own set of evolution challenges.
